While many other professions are enjoying the summer heat, property managers are busy sorting out fixed term tenancies for the year ahead.

And while some rental properties will become available for new tenancies, many tenants will simply require a renewal of their tenancy agreement.

January 16, 2019:  What’s a reasonable cost for breaking a lease? 

The Prohibiting Letting Fees Amendment Bill has now been in force for over a month and it didn’t take long for the media to report on apparent an “loophole.”

In a recent story, reported by the NZ Herald, an Auckland property management firm charged a tenant $250 for his niece taking over a tenancy.

Now, Section 17A (2) of the Prohibiting Letting Fees Amendment Bill clearly states a property manager can “recover reasonable expenses” for changing an agreement.

The real question is $250 a reasonable expense?
